The 2024 income tax filing season is just around the corner, and it’s important to…
What to do if your auto-assessment is incorrect

Receiving an automated assessment from SARS can be a relief, until you look at the numbers and realise something is wrong. Whether SARS missed key deductions, miscalculated your income, or auto-assessed you using incomplete data, you do not have to accept an inaccurate result. Here is what you need to know and the exact steps to take if you disagree with your auto-assessment:
- Do not accept the assessment in eFiling
If you agree with an auto-assessment, accepting it finalises your return. If you disagree, do not accept it. Instead, file a normal tax return via SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp to correct the details.
- Gather supporting documentation
Before submitting adjustments, ensure you have all relevant tax certificates and proof ready. Common missing items include:
- Medical scheme tax certificates and qualifying out-of-pocket medical expenses
- Retirement annuity contribution certificates
- IT3(b) and IT3(c) certificates for investment income and capital gains
- Travel logbooks and home office expenditure records (if applicable)
- Submit an updated return before the deadline
You must submit a complete and corrected return to replace the auto-assessment within the standard tax season timeline. SARS will then process your return and issue a revised Notice of Assessment (ITA34).
- Lodge a dispute or objection (if needed)
If SARS rejects your submitted return or issues an assessment you still disagree with, you have the right to lodge a formal Dispute or Notice of Objection (NOO) on eFiling. This must generally be done within 80 business days of the assessment date, backed by clear evidence.
